"Ayurveda means 'the science of life' (AYUS == LIFE/LONGEVITY VEDA == KNOWLEDGE/SCIENCE).It is more than 5000 years old ancient system of healing that focuses on the complete person which, includes the body, mind and spirit. Traditional medicine tends to focus on a specific symptom or disease. Ayurveda says that for complete wellness to occur, the body, mind and spirit must be in harmony with each other and naturally resistant to disease causing conditions." — oilpulling.com
A quality oil is a must for optimal results; i.e. cold/expeller-pressed, organic and unrefined. All the while, the course of choosing the right kind of oil is completely up to personal preference. Common oils used include coconut, sesame and sunflower. Keep in mind to avoid oils such as canola, corn, cottonseed, flax and soy.
Traditionally, oil pulling is done first thing upon arising. The act of "pulling" is a gentle swish motion that pulls the oil throughout your mouth; do not gargle much less swallow. Commence by pulling a spoonful of oil. As a guideline, 20 minutes is proper timing to draw out toxins. In the meantime, proceed with your regular routine. Once enough time has passed, the oil will be a milky consistency. Then spit and dispose as you would with any cooking oil; i.e. never pour oil down the drain. (Personally, I spit the oil out in a baggie and throw it away in the trash.) As for after-care, rinse with salt water to soothe and wash away oily residue by brushing your teeth. Repeat the process based on a personal basis, which may be two to three times daily."The limiting factor for many people is palatability. Sesame oil is more warming than other oils and may be more gently detoxifying than other oils that are “colder” energetically. It has a somewhat strong sesame flavor, which is a familiar food taste for most people. Sunflower oil has a milder taste if you prefer that.Coconut oil is a familiar taste for many people. It has a cooler energy than sesame oil, so it’s good for people who tend to have a warmer constitution or condition of heat. Some people have reported that coconut oil is more strongly detoxifying, which isn’t always a good thing for some people, so it’s best to be cautious and go slowly." — oilpulling.com
